NEW YORK (Reuters) -The U. S. health care system will pay $1.4 billion a year to settle lawsuits filed by the plaintiffs alleging that the heartburn drug Nexium and similar medications were linked to cancer. AstraZeneca, the maker of AstraZeneca medicines, said the settlement would include $1.4 billion in $1.3 billion in rebates to the plaintiffs.
The settlement will help to cover the remaining millions of dollars in rebates that would be paid under the settlement. The amount will be based on the company's annual sales figures. Nexium, which was launched in 2001, and Prevacid, the world's most expensive prescription drug, also went on the market in 2000.
Nexium, the generic version of AstraZeneca's blockbuster drug for heartburn, was first introduced in March 2000. It is a brand-name version of the prescription drug Prilosec, which is used to treat heartburn and acid reflux. Prilosec was approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September 2000.
The plaintiffs claimed that the drugs were linked to cancer, particularly in the United States. They contended that AstraZeneca failed to adequately warn consumers about the cancer risks. They said AstraZeneca intentionally ignored or failed to disclose the risks of the cancer, which included heartburn.
The plaintiffs' attorney, Robert W. Weid, said the settlement was not a fair or fair resolution, but said that he was "surprised" by the amount of money they were to receive from the settlement.

In the meantime, AstraZeneca has agreed to pay $500 million to resolve the plaintiffs' claims in the next few weeks.
"It is clear from our agreement that we will continue to defend our position in the litigation," AstraZeneca said in a statement. "We have been a long, hard-working company with a long history of consistent success in the fight against cancer."
The plaintiffs filed suit against Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries in January, seeking an injunction against them, and a jury award in their favor. The case is being prosecuted by a federal court in New Jersey.Copyright 2025 AFP
